"When the President’s Commission on Implementation of United States Space Exploration Policy (often called the President’s Commission on Moon, Mars, and Beyond, or simply the Aldridge Commission after chairman Pete Aldridge) issued its final report in mid-June, it won seemingly unanimous praise from the small but often contentious space advocacy community. The Space Foundation announced it “fully supports” the Commission’s recommendations, and challenged NASA to implement them. The National Space Society (NSS) described the report as “a plan that will transform NASA and lead the way to a spacefaring civilization.” Even the Space Frontier Foundation, while quibbling with some of the language in the report, called it a “rhetorical breakthrough” and “a huge step forward in human space exploration."

Nice cushy jobs, workfare when no work is available and spending the nations way into debt rather than being cost a little more sensitive to making things cost less.

Again we have Dr. Zubrin practicing his "all or nothing" strategy. The VSE is the clearest mandate that NASA has had since JFK told NASA to "land a man on the moon before this decade is out and return him safely to the Earth."
Because the VSE sets NASA on the path to explore the solar system and not just Mars or even put Mars first, Zubrin wants to trash the whole report!
The good Dr. needs to learn the fine art of compromise, a skill that most of us learned back in kindergarten. Dr Zurbrin needs to learn is to work and play well with others.
What I fear most is that Mars Direct, as proposed by Zubrin, will be seen by the American people as a stunt, a one trick pony to be abandoned once it is accomplished. That’s exactly what happened after we successfully landed men on the moon and it stifled American space exploration for the next 30 years.
